By: AshleyFooly Cooly is 6 episodes long, and upon my first viewing I sat in confusion and had no idea what happened. It’s so abstract and fast paced, you most likely have to watch it multiple times to even grasp a few concepts. It’s very nostalgic and very well made. The animation, soundtrack, and writing is very great and really sticks with me. Best described as a psychological coming of age. The creator made it on a whim, and threw random stuff he liked all together. Some references are specific to the creator himself (Spicy Curry). I do think I only watched it all the way through once but I’ve rewatched scenes and have watched countless videos with different interpretations. Many people agree it’s about maturing. A coming of age story- but at the same time it’s not a coming of age story. It’s about embracing individuality, and having the strength to stay true to yourself amidst the insanity of the world around you, where nothing makes sense. The crazy fast pace and nonsense is comfortingly similar to what we experience when we go through puberty. Everything’s changing and you don’t have time to process it. It’s a true masterpiece and even though I’m not sure what’s going on, I saw myself in many of the characters. Part of me wants to say Minami is my favorite character. Her arc is sooo good. I relate to her not being able to let someone go, (and that someone doesn’t care about her) she held onto him. And then she puts her affections onto someone else for no reason. Oh, also she’s obsessed with fire and had committed arson on multiple occasions. Her having a happy ending is very satisfying to me. The purple haired girl is also quite relatable in ways I won’t get into because I don’t remember. A character I wasn’t all that fond of was Haruko. She looks cool and is mostly portrayed to be a fun, sexy anime lady.I see a small part of myself in her. She’s often regarded as an adult who’s never really grown up. This makes the main character realize that age and wisdom don’t always correlate. I’m growing up, I’m 18 now I have NO idea what I’m going to do. Haruko being crazy and random but still being seen as ‘responsible’ by some just because she’s an adult is interesting to see. How good can a show be to where my 2nd least favorite character is one that I identify quite a bit with. I truly believe Fooly Cooly is a masterpiece. |
