Nico: Hellooo-oo this is Nico Eponine from the Friendcities Interview Corner, and today we’re here with DJ Cammieoto, how are you Cammie?

Cammie: I’m good, how are you?

Nico: Good, I’m very happy to have you here, I’ve had my eye on you for a while so this has been in the making for sure. But like, I don’t know, this is awesome, this is our first interview!

Cammie: I’m very excited

Nico: Let’s get into it! Tell us first, just a little about yourself; tell us: who is Cammieoto? 

Cammie: Wellll, I’m Cammieoto! [laughs] No, my name is Cammie, I’m a DJ based in Phoenix and I’ve been DJ’ing for a little over a year now. And it’s been very life-changing, it’s been very life-changing and I’ve met some really amazing people through the process. Being in the music scene is something I didn’t realize how amazing it would be until I actually…

Nico: Got to do it?

Cammie: Exactly, exactly, so the more I do it the more it makes me just wanna keep growing and connecting with other creatives out here in Phoenix, and just like all over, but yeah

Nico: Yeah! So you said you’ve been doing it for about a year?

Cammie: Yeah

Nico: Okay, very nice! Yeah, I feel like it’s been a big year for you, like I mean, if you’re hip and happening you’ve been to a DJ Cammieoto set, but I’ve been seeing the posters, the flyers, I feel like you’ve been getting better timeslots and everything, so yeah I don’t know it seems like it’s been a big year for you! Do you feel that way? 

Cammie: Thank you, thank you. I do! I do, actually, yeah. I think because of how fast time has been flying by, it can be hard to actually realize how many cool and amazing opportunities I’ve been given, but no like, I’m definitely very aware of the fact that I’m getting really amazing opportunities and I’m very grateful for the people taking a chance on me!

Nico: No, yeah for sure! I feel like everybody who’s taken those chances, it’s paid off for them. Can you tell us how you started versus how it goes now, just in terms of like, it really does feel like you’ve been getting a lot of recognition and getting lowkey big?

Cammie: Aw, thank you. So, when I first started DJ’ing I was just like, bedroom DJ. I would just find a lot of songs that I liked and wanted to see how they would turn out if I mixed them, so I just kept doing that until I got the hang of things. And like, a month after I really started I got my first opportunity from some of my friends who run their own music collective out here. They had me do a DJ set for one of their open mic nights, and that was really awesome. I remember I was super nervous because that was like my first “real” gig? And even though it was like, 15 minutes [laughs] it was still really nerve-wracking, but everybody was really nice, really supportive and that made me realize that I wanted to keep doing it. And just over time, the more people I’d gotten to know the more opportunities I’ve been given. I really rarely am the one reaching out to places for gigs, it’s usually friends of mine giving me the chance and opportunities, which I’m very, very grateful for

Nico: Oh okay, that is very cool! Just being tapped in and stuff it’s like, people will start coming to you! That must be nice!

Cammie: Yeah, people keep flocking to me [laughs]

Nico: So, what stands out to me a lot about your sets and I think– I mean, to speak for everybody [laughs]– it’s very eclectic, like I think your sets are really cool in that there’s you can hear oldies, you can hear throwbacks, there’s like, pussy rap, you just put anything in there. Not in a bad way, it just like, is very fun because I think you have a lot of music influences. So just, would you be able to tell us a little bit about how you put it all together, and what you pull from?

Cammie: Yeah so, the main genres that I find myself gravitating towards are like, ghettotech, I mean I love tech– techno– overall, but I love the subgenre ghettotech a lot. And like, Chicago juke, footwork, that one’s really awesome. What else? I love drum and bass, jungle; I just love

music a lot, and I’m very open-minded when it comes to music– I honestly feel like it’s very rare for me to find a genre that I don’t like. So I love experimenting all the time and just mixing stuff people don’t expect– I like keeping people on their toes..

Nico: No yeah, that’s for sure, like when you hear your mixes you can tell that you love music– you feel the love of the music, you know? And that’s what makes people wanna dance!

Cammie: Yayyy, that’s the goal, that’s the goal

Nico: So, besides music, I do think your style, your personal fashion is very distinct, like everybody knows the DJ Cammieoto lip combo, everybody knows your fits, so what kinda fashion inspirations do you have?

Cammie: Oh my god, umm, I’ve honestly been somebody who like, takes a lot of pride in expressing themselves through clothing, and I love just doing stuff that isn’t the norm. Like, everybody who knows me knows I love a pattern clash, I love mixing patterns and stuff that people would think don’t go together but that makes me wanna do it more, that makes me wanna wear it more. But I think just wearing stuff that feels authentic and true to me is what makes it signature, like connecting to my overall image

Nico: Yeah, for sure. Well no, I really like that because it does sound like there’s the throughline between your music and the way you present yourself as just like, putting things together that you wouldn’t expect and like that’s what makes it so cool, so unique! I did wear– the recording is not gonna be able to see– but I did wear plaid today because that feels very “DJ Cammieoto”, so you know, I had to throw it on

Cammie: Ayyy, that’s so cute

Nico: Oh well, thank you! So what has it been like– obviously DJ’ing is a very male-dominated field– what has it been like DJ’ing as a woman? Has it been good experiences, or– I mean, you don’t have to air anybody out [laughs]– but how has it been for you? 

Cammie: It’s been really awesome; I think I’ve been lucky that the people I’ve surrounded myself with are pretty awesome and it’s been very rare that I’ve came across people that have had a bad impact on me while I’ve been DJ’ing, so I think honestly just surrounding “myselfs”– yes, plural [laughs]– I think surrounding myself with other women DJ’s and just like, non gender-conforming DJ’s has been very awesome, and that’s where I feel the most comfortable and able to fully express myself. I just wanna create an atmosphere where everybody feels like they can be themselves– like everybody can just shake they ass a lil bit or whatever [laughs]

Nico: [laughing] Exactly, exactly. Well yeah no, I think the way you… I mean, again it’s just what you pull from and what you surround yourself with, so you really do have a strong sense of identity I feel. And that really comes out in your output, you know?

Cammie: Thank youuu

Nico: So, what do you want your fanbase to be called? What should we call ourselves, what are the DJ Cammieoto stans?

Cammie: Holy freak, that’s such a good question… girl… [laughs]

Nico: [laughs] I’m throwing the hard balls

Cammie: No, you threw a hard fucking ball– that’s a really good question. I never even thought of myself as somebody who would have a fanbase, so that is a very good question, we will have it in the future

Nico: Yeah, we’ll put a pin in it [laughing]

Cammie: [laughing] I gotta ponder this

Nico: Where does the “-oto” come from? Because, I mean, “Cammie” is your first name, but…

Cammie: Yes, yes, so Cammie is my nickname, but the “-oto” comes from… me just being a lil nerd growing up; I really liked Sailor Moon and Sailor Jupiter was my favorite character. So when I was in high school it was my finsta username, cause I just took my nickname and the last part of Sailor Jupiter’s name and just combined them

Nico: Waittt, that’s so cuteee, ahhhh. The exclusive lore…

Cammie: The exclusive lore, I always gotta give people the lore, cause they’re like ‘what is the -oto?’ I’m like ‘No, there’s backstory, trust’

Nico: Nooo, I love that. I’m such a shoujo girlie, so I love the Sailor Moon reference; big, this is big. So, obviously you love music, are you wanting to keep DJ’ing for the time being, do you want to get into other avenues with music? What are your goals? Let us know

Cammie: So, I really wanna get into producing, so I’m hoping that happens very soon. But I’ve always saw myself as being a music producer before DJ’ing, like I never really expected that I would take DJ’ing as seriously as I did. I do wanna keep DJ’ing, but producing is definitely something I wanna tap into. I just love the idea of being a DJ who plays their own stuff, so definitely that. I did used to write songs as a kid, so I am tryna tap back into, I’m tryna tap back into that. But overall, I just hope to make music, whether it’s through producing, singing, songwriting

Nico: Mhm, is there anybody that– either like, in terms of, you see as very accessible, or dream, like one day– is there anyone you wanna produce for? 

Cammie: Holy freak. Well, Pinkpantheress. I love Pinkpantheress, that would be really awesome. Definitely Pinkpantheress, a lot of my influences and inspirations are women most of the time, so like Pinkpantheress, Amaarae, Erika de Casier, Tinashe, Rochelle Jordan, Kelela

Nico: Oooh, that’s a good rap sheet… let’s get you in there

Cammie: No like, put me in, coach [laughing]

Nico: I like the idea of you becoming known for your producing, like when Kaytranada, he’s a producer, but then he’ll have DJ sets and everybody’s like ‘we gottaaa go see that Kaytranada DJ set’, I love the idea of you being like that, I can see that for your future

Cammie: Thank youuu

Nico: So! We are now going to do a rapid fire question portion. I’m just gonna ask you the questions and say the first thing that comes to your mind– some of them are not opinion-based, some of them are. But, first question: what’s your star sign? 

Cammie: I’m a Gemini

Nico: Gemini… wait! When’s your birthday? 

Cammie: June 18th!

Nico: June 18th, so it’s coming up…

Cammie: She’s coming up

Nico: [laughs] You doing anything?

Cammie: I’m still plotting, I’m still plotting. I have a really hard time when it comes to like, setting up events for myself. I really wanna do something, but we shall see.

Nico: Well, let me know– you know I plan a party [laughs]

Cammie: Oh, you plan a party [laughs]

Nico: This got very not-rapid-fire, very quick [laughing] But what is your favorite food? Cammie: Chicken tenders [laughs]

Nico: Chicken tenders? Okay, I’ll keep that in mind for craft services next time, next time I have you in. What have you been listening to lately? 

Cammie: Honestly, with Henry, I’ve been listening to a lot of Justin Timberlake. No like, he’s been on loop– the, what’s it called? The 20/20 Experience album. That one has been on loop for the past couple days. Who else? I have been listening to a lot of Kaytranada, his early stuff I really enjoy. Um, who else? I’m always listening to Pinkpantheress…

Nico: What’s your favorite Pinkpantheress album? Or even song, era, anything? 

Cammie: I love the Fancy That, like her current era. But I also do really love the Heaven Knows era

Nico: I loveeee Heaven Knows, I have a poster in my room [laughs]

Cammie: Really? I love Heaven Knows 

Nico: No, I love Heaven Knows, I love that you love Pinkpantheress. What is your favorite live show that you’ve been to this year?

Cammie: Pinkpantheress [laughs] I just saw her last month when she came to Financial Theatre and like, you know me, I had the VIP, like, I was in the pit [laughs] I was in the pit. No, she’s a really awesome performer and just seeing how much confidence she’s grown as a performer and artist is awesome, so that was a very memorable, amazing experience.

Nico: No yeah, definitely, like she’s just– ah! We’re OG fans, over here. Officially endorsed by Friendcities, by the way.

Nico: What’s your favorite venue to DJ at? 

Cammie: Ooh, I love Gracie’s, no I love DJ’ing at Gracies. Like, I remember when I first started DJ’ing I was like ‘oh my god, I wanna play at Club Contact so bad’ and I still wanna play at Contact more– I’ve only played there once, surprisingly– but the first time I DJ’ed at Gracie’s I was like ‘wait a minute, this is really awesome’. I think just the fact that there’s so much space and like, people feel the music in a different way, cause it’s outside, there’s like, dancing, not caring about anything. So definitely Gracie’s and the one I just had at Studio at Wilson. I love DJ’ing in spots that aren’t conventional, like spots you wouldn’t really think of

Nico: Oh, I meant to ask this when you were talking about your birthday; would you DJ at your own party, or would you not wanna do that? Which way would you go? 

Cammie: Hmmm, I feel like now if I were to host something for my birthday, I would have like, friends of mine DJ’ing instead of me, but in the future I think that would be something pretty awesome

Nico: That would be really cool, exclusive

Cammie: No exactly, the way that people have given me opportunities, friends of mine have given me opportunities, I would want to give them chances

Nico: No yeah, that makes sense. Pay it forward?

Cammie: Mm-hm!

Nico: Okay, last rapid fire: what is “in” for you right now? 

Cammie: What is in for me? Ummm, that is a good question… honestly flip-flops

Nico: Flip-flops? Just like the regular, plastic kind?

Cammie: The plastic kind, the expensive kind, the nitty-gritty, heavy-duty kind. No like, I love a flip-flop– fresh pedicure with a flip-flop

Nico: I see that, I see that. We’re letting the people know: summer ‘26 that’s fresh pedicure and a flip-flop year

Cammie: Exactlyy. With a capri

Nico: Hooo, capris are so in right now, for sure, for sure. Alright well, you are setting the scene, setting the culture. This went by kinda quick [laughs] But thank you for doing the interview with me, this has been lovely. And just, last question: Is there anything you wanna tell the people? Is there anything you wanna tell the viewers and listeners of Friendcities? 

Cammie: Well, I would tell everybody to keep tuning into Friendcities, because I think what you guys are doing is very awesome and very serving to the community

Cammie: Well, yes! I love supporting local anything, so I really hope people gravitate towards you guys more, cause I think what you’re doing is very awesome
